Response paper to Everyday Religion (Academic Study of Religion)

Everyday religion is a way to differ the practice of daily activity from the official teaching of religion. This term implies that every religion has their own teaching, but also has their own practices from its adherents. The differences arose because there are many ways for understanding of teaching by people. Everyday religion is other version of ways of understanding by ordinary or common people in the modern era.

The term of everyday religion contains with two contradictions. The first is about the distinguishing between ordinary people and non-ordinary people, or “official people”. This term is so problematic because in reality there is no distinguishing among the society. If the different factor is coming from the power to translate of understand the religious teaching, it will be useless. Nothing “official people” can be the only one trusted for translating, there are many other “official people” also. So, the problem is not merely about the ordinary people understanding, but also the different understanding from “official people”.

The second is about the term of modern era. According to Berger and Ammerman, everyday religion happens only in modern society. This term of Modern refers to Western history, such as enlightenment, industrial revolution, and capitalism era, and so forth. If the point of view of everyday religion is about the different understanding about religious teaching, obviously many religions have their own experience. For instance, many conflicts happened in the early Islamic history among Khawarij, Sunni and Shiite. It obviously happened because of the sharp difference of understanding the teaching of Islam. So, in pre modern era also happened many everyday religions.

Everyday religion contains contradictions arose from the term itself. Two of them are about the confusing distinguishing between ordinary and no-ordinary people, and the problems of modern society. Historically, there are no clear different from the problems arose except the sharp difference about understanding of religious teaching.

Islamic Education Challenge

The First World Conference on Muslim Education at Mecca, 1977 concluded that the purpose of Islamic Education is “to create a good and pious human being, who devotes Allah, builds their personal structure compatibly with Islamic Sharia and gets all of their daily life as the manifestation of their obedience to Allah”.   The key word for this conclusion is that the purpose of Islamic education tends to build a good character of human beings. Is that true? Yes! Everybody will agree that our Islamic education is about making a perfect human from all sides, here and hereafter. However, what factor that has been missed from that statement? The first, we can see that the ideal purpose is about human beings. How to make good and pious human beings is the central issue for Islamic education. In this sense, we have forgotten the other factor in every education; it is the structure of education itself. Why is the structure important? The answer is that there is no education system with...
