Between religion and identity

My first question about relationship among religion, state and also civil society rose when there are many debates how to find the harmony among them. This conclusion accuses that historically we realize that there is a tight relationship among religion, state and civil society. We never found the rising one country without relating it to religion or specifically religious society. The obvious example is the first embodiment of USA. It was clearly stated that USA is always under one understanding about the rule of God there through the “In God We Trust” clause in the Pledge of Allegiance. It may happen only when there is a tight relationship among state, religion and society. Historically speaking, there is no denying about the role of religion or religious society in the world.

Based on that conclusion, the conflict between religious society and state is more about the need of defending the identity. The study of migration wave in Europe and America has triggered many worries about the erosion of their identity, the American or European identity. Huntington pictured it clearly that religious diversity which came from Hispanic immigration eroded the Anglo-protestant culture.[1] as Well as Huntington, Fallacy also sees that Muslim immigration in Europe has threatened the identity of European.[2] Those conclusions lead the to the anxiety that religious communities always bring their agenda for changing the reality based on their understanding about the ideal reality.

Without excluding the problem within religion itself, we should worry that the big picture about conflict among religion, state and society has moved from its problem’s root. The issue has moved from identity to the secular and religious things, although we realize that there is no clear separation between religion and state’s role in reality. This is very annoying because we believe and realize that democracy and civil society always give the equality for every people and community that there is no exclusive treatment for some. The anxiety has already generated much discrimination in the society.

Berotak Tekad, Berhati Malaikat; a Tribute to Undar Jombang

18 September 1965, tanggal kelahiran Undar Jombang. Sudah begitu tua, setua Gus Mujib, Neng Eyik dan Gus Lukman yang sampai sekarang masih menjadi penguasa-penguasa Undar, asyik mengangkangi “tahta kecil” mereka. Tapi Undar memang istimewa, biarpun dihantam krisis kepemimpinan sejak lama, sampai sekarang masih saja berdiri kukuh. Menantang langit, mengukir jaman.

The Toughest Week

I would genuinely say that this week is one of the hardest. Problems visit like a flood, not giving me some time to breathe. However, I fortunately feel okay, considering it as a process that can make me stronger. First, my boss decided to cut off my salary this morning because of giving the batiks that I should make into office's uniform into my friend from Philippine. I did it because I felt bad to invite him to my pesantren without handing over such souvenir. I thought that I can buy it another batiks which has similar pattern (kawung) at Beringharjo market. However, my boss had different view and the result is that he punished me by cutting my salary as a substitute to price of batiks he provided to me. It is rather funny I guess, but I will not make a mess with that small problem. I should fully accept it as a risk when I hand my office's gift into other. Second, I failed to secure some money to pay rent for the house. Therefore, I turn up into the last choice to ...
