A blurred future to Peace?

Gregory Hooks: Can Grand Theories of The State Help Us Envision A Grand Theory of Peace?

Reading this article, I found the pessimistic conclusion that there is a blur future to make peace around this world. Hooks argues that if we merely rely on the Westphalian states, we should be aware that those states will always wage war for ensuring and reaching the sovereignty and autonomy from other state. Thus, the function of several states organization such as United Nations is very unrealistic to make peace in the world.

I would argue that this is very different from my understanding about the role of state and the effort to make a peace. If we merely see states as only the contestant for the other state, I could say that there are a lot of states which can build a peace each others. For example, the peace relation between Indonesia and Timor Leste recently will ensure us that there is a glimmer hope of peace in this condition, a westphalian states. State plays important role to build a new peace, even though they (Indonesia and Timor Leste) have waged a war each other in the past.

I myself agree that the meaning of peace is more than the absence of war. However, I found this article merely talk about the role of state and society which could not make peace as long as they place themselves in an equal position among them. This requires state and society not to discriminate or press the other. It means that peace is the absence of conflict in their life. Well, surely I doubt this. People, society or even state will always bring themselves into the conflict circle, because we are always political. We cannot ignore this fact that our everyday life always contains conflict.

Here I see that there is no consistency in this article. In the last, while imposing that the state should be aware about the role of conflict in the transnational state (example: UN and EU), Hooks proposes the effort to understand and pay attention more in regional dynamics. The word “dynamics” itself contains conflict. We cannot ignore the fact that the building of our states is always about contesting, powering and mastering each others. That is the great example of politics. Since we cannot ignore it, it will be better for us to make peace using the power of conflict itself. We can propose that the meaning of peace is about our dynamic in the real political life. It is because people and state are always political.

Watak Pengecut

Ini sekedar renungan singkat, jangan terlalu diambil hati, tapi tetep boleh dikomentari. Dalam sebuah atau bahkan tiap-tiap forum, mengapa orang Indonesia cenderung suka duduk di belakang daripada di depan? Ada 3 jawaban menurutku.  Pertama, kita memang bangsa yang sopan, sehingga cenderung malu dan merasa tidak pantas untuk duduk di depan daripada orang lain. Kedua, kita ini bangsa yang minderan, merasa diri tidak pantas karena kita memang kurang begitu yakin dengan kemampuan kita sendiri, sehingga kita merasa malu untuk duduk didepan. Ketiga, kita ini bangsa pengecut, tidak pernah mau berdiri didepan, cermin ketidakberanian menjadi pemimpin, mental inlander (terjajah), sehingga kita merasa tidak mampu dan tidak bakalan mau. Takut untuk gagal, tetapi senengnya minta ampun kalau mengejek mereka-mereka yang gagal ketika berada didepan, tetapi ketika disuruh kedepan sendiri tidak mau. Saya sendiri cenderung memilih nomer 3. NU sebagai Identitas kultural : Sebuah perspektif pribadi*

Oleh : Azzam Anwar* 31 Januari 2012 nanti, NU akan genap berumur 86 tahun. Sebuah penggalan waktu yang amat sangat lama. Berbagai lintasan sejarah entah itu kelam ataupun terang telah membuat NU semakin kokoh eksistensi dan semangatnya. Tidak dipungkiri, NU telah sedemikian lama mewarnai perjalanan sejarah ini, dari setiap masa ke masa, menjadi fenomena yang nyata hadir dan memberi kontribusi entah negatif entah positif bagi kita semua. Sebagai sebuah fenomena, NU tentu saja amat sangat luas untuk sekedar diteropong dengan tulisan singkat ini, tapi itu semua niscaya untuk dilakukan. Tulisan ini adalah refleksi pribadi seorang anak muda yang berusaha memahami eksistensi dirinya dengan menjadikan NU sebagai cermin besar pusat refleksi itu sendiri. Sebagai sebuah refleksi, tentu saja ia harus dimulai dengan pertanyaan-pertanyaan jujur dan apa adanya yang muncul dari skema konstruk dan pengalaman pribadi penulis selama bergulat dengan dunia ke-NU-an. Semua itu bernama : Kesempatan...

Di depanku, duduk mencangkung dua sahabat lama yang saling berbicara seru berdua tentang cerita lama mereka. Jadi pendengar setia, aku ikut tersenyum simpul dan kadang tertawa. Cerita yang seru. Karena, inilah realitas yang mungkin tidak pernah atau jarang ku temui dimanapun. Dua sahabat lama itu bercerita tentang nostalgia mereka berdua ketika masih sama-sama kuliah S1 dulu. Satu hal yang tidak aku percayai, dua orang sahabat ini dulunya adalah teman sekampus, kakak adik angkatan. Tetapi, dua orang ini berbeda dalam perjalanan kedepan. Satu orang melanjutkan kuliah S2, satunya lagi menikah dan bergelut dengan realitas nyata hidup berkeluarga, bermasyarakat dan bernegara. Kesan yang aku tangkap, meskipun pembicaraan dua orang itu tidak mempunyai kesamaan perbincangan, tetapi ada satu hal yang mereka sepakati : Kesempatan.
