Response paper to Postcolonial consciousness in Indonesia: Azyumardi Azra (Theories of Social and Religion)
The tendency of the
intellectual content of the transmission process of a network of Middle East
scholars into the Archipelago (Nusantara) is more of a Neo-Sufism, which is the
fruit of the integration of understanding the Qur'an and Hadith with a variety of
religious understanding and practice of the scholars at that time.
Local thought of clerics
and the contribution of scholar network to the process of Islamization of the Archipelago
considered very large, especially after the relationship with the Middle East
and Nusantara scholars began intense. There are some scholars who are very
instrumental in the process of Islamization of Nusantara, among others: Nur
al-Din al-Raniri, 'Abd. Ra'uf Al-Sinkili, Muhammad Yusuf Al-Maqassari,
Al-Palimbani, Al-Banjari, and many others.
After a long process of
Islamization of Nusantara, on the subsequent development of the Islamic world
is very interesting to study about various intellectual tendencies which are
new and valuable ammunition for the scholars in fostering and preserving Islam
in the archipelago. It is very important to be studied to establish the
understanding that Islam in Indonesia was derived from sources that could be
accounted for, either horizontally or vertically.
As known, the process
of interaction Muslim leaders from around the world share in Haramain has
spawned a variety of friction, particularly in the field of religion. After
going through a fairly long integration among Muslims Haramain, Persia, India
and Nusantara, it appears that significant differences in the socio-cultural
background of each condition. So do not be surprised if Haramain position as a
"melting pot" (melting pot) various traditions of "small"
Islam that fused to form "new synthesis" of the Islamic tradition.
Spirit to return to Sunni orthodoxy seems to reach the culmination, resulting
in the emergence of a new spirit, the spirit of revival that inspired the
establishment of school in the Middle East region after the founding of
Nidhamiyah school.
The period of
reconciliation began to adorn the pattern of interaction seems to scholars in
this period. It is characterized by mutual approach-oriented scholars Shari'a
(the fuqaha ') with the Sufis. Long-lasting conflict between the two groups of
scholars began to recede, began the development of doctrine which is
characterized by persistent taught by Al-Ghazali and Al-Qushayri several
centuries before that contribute greatly to the birth of the schools of
Neo-Sufism.
